DIPG Registry
Quick Facts:

  • DIPG primarily affects children
  • There are 100-150 new diagnoses per year in the United States
  • In children, DIPG is the leading cause of deaths from brain tumors
DIPG (Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma) is a disease which strikes at the heart of childhood and it is a disease in desperate need of a cure.

Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma, commonly referred to as pontine glioma, infiltrative brainstem glioma, or DIPG, is a rare tumor of the brainstem that occurs almost exclusively in children. A pontine glioma occurs in a most delicate area of the brainstem (the "pons"), which controls many critical functions, including breathing and blood pressure. Its location, as well as the way it infiltrates nearby brain tissue, makes it especially difficult to treat.

Consider the following:

  • Lung cancer has a survival rate of 80% if caught in the early stages to less than 5% if caught in stage 5.
  • Breast cancer has typically an 80-90% survival rate.
  • Leukemia has a 48% survival rate.
  • Less than 10% of DIPG children will live longer than 18 months from diagnosis.
  • The survival rate for DIPG is 0%

Awareness

The name says it all:

"Diffuse" -- it is spread among the nerves and tissues of the brain stem.
"Intrinsic" -- it is wrapped amongst them, making surgery or
accurate and

                  selective radiation virtually impossible.

"Pontine" -- it is located in the pons (middle) of the brain stem.
"Glioma" -- the tumor arises from the glia, the tissues that support the neurons

                 (the thinking cells).

Doing all the we can......

The support we have received from our friends, family and community has been amazing. We have been uplifted by your kind words, sincere gestures and most of all your prayers.

We greatly appreciate the outpouring of generosity and continued support we are recieving.

Why are we fundraising?

We are fundraising to help support the Culverhouse family while they support Jack. Andrea and Jason are currently not working at their day to day jobs. Their full time job right now is to care for Jack and their two other sons, Nolan and Lincoln. We are fundraising to help cover the out of pocket medical costs for treating Jack's illness. We are also fundraising to help cover the household and daily expenses for this family of five.

It may seem like we can not do much to help. However, easing the financial worries and burdon for this family is something that we can do. Helping just a little can go a long way. Medical treatments are expensive, even with insurance. Every single dollar we raise is beneficial to help this family focus on the most important thing: Jack!
